Byzantine and Medieval Epirus \u2014 In the Footsteps of a Heritage of History, Art and Spirituality<\/strong><\/h3>\n

At the crossroads of the Greek world, amid majestic mountains, deep valleys and stone-built villages, Epirus preserves one of the most remarkable Byzantine and medieval heritages in Greece. Far from the great imperial centres, this region, long regarded as peripheral, was nevertheless a land of intense political, artistic and spiritual activity. Monasteries, churches, chapels, fortresses and historic towns still bear witness to this distinctive history.<\/p>\n

This journey explores Epirus through the centuries, from the final periods of the Byzantine Empire to the post-Byzantine era. Particular attention is given to the Despotate of Epirus, which made the region of Ioannina one of the major centres of the Byzantine world following the capture of Constantinople in 1204. The surviving monuments reveal the political and cultural role played by this land at the meeting point of the Byzantine, Western and Ottoman worlds.<\/p>\n

The itinerary also unveils the exceptional richness of Epirote monumental painting. Within churches and monasteries, frescoes express a conception of art that goes far beyond the pursuit of formal beauty: symbolism, inwardness and spiritual depth give these sacred images their particular power. The great cycles of mural paintings dating from the 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th centuries are precious witnesses to the development of post-Byzantine art and to the School of Painting of Northwestern Greece.<\/p>\n

Yet Epirus is not discovered through its monuments alone. The journey also crosses unspoilt landscapes, traditional villages, ancient paths and places where historical memory remains deeply alive. From Ioannina to the secluded monasteries of the mountains, from ancient fortresses to churches adorned with frescoes, each stage reveals another facet of this remarkable region.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
