Of the thirty monasteries recorded in historical texts, only six survive today, which welcome many pilgrims. Many smaller monasteries, which were founded mainly in the 14th century, have been abandoned. Initially, access to the Monasteries was by climbing, a struggle for isolation and the search for the divine. Today, most people use the steps carved into the rocks, but climbing remains an exciting alternative activity, perhaps the best way to enjoy the uniqueness of the landscape. In addition to climbing, the area is ideal for magical walks on beautiful paths, which hide the huge rocks created 10 million years ago, after a period of geological fermentation lasting 15 million years. The continuous geological changes, combined with erosion by wind and rain, have shaped the rocks into their current shape. In 1988, UNESCO included Meteora in the list of World Monuments, classifying them as one of the most important monuments in the world and characterizing them as a \u201cPreserved and Protected Monument of Humanity\u201d.
